The latest episode of the podcast “Meeting With the Mayor” focused on public safety, Rapid City’s sports complex project and the city’s upcoming summer tourism season, as Mayor Jason Salamun discussed several major community issues.
One of the most serious topics involved a bomb threat Thursday at Rapid City Central High School that forced a full evacuation of the school. Salamun said local law enforcement, the FBI and personnel from Ellsworth Air Force Base responded quickly.
“Thankfully, it’s looking like a national hoax sort of situation,” Salamun said during the episode.
The mayor said authorities still must treat every threat seriously and praised first responders and school staff for their handling of the situation. Federal investigators are reportedly working to determine connections to similar threats across the country.
Salamun also provided updates on the proposed Rapid City sports complex, saying the city is actively reviewing proposals for management, architecture and engineering work tied to the project. He said interest from developers and operators has been strong.
“There is a ton of interest. People want to build this, design this, run this,” Salamun said.
The mayor added that the city continues working with Pete Lien & Sons on a land donation agreement valued at more than $6 million.
Another major discussion centered on parole reform, which has become a significant issue in South Dakota’s governor’s race. Salamun credited Don Hedrick for pushing the issue forward months before it gained statewide political attention.
“Chief Hedrick was several months ago just, it was really, really coming to a boiling point before it was ever making the news,” Salamun said.
The episode also highlighted several upcoming community events, including a citywide photo at Main Street Square for a time capsule celebrating Rapid City’s 150th anniversary and preparations for America’s 250th birthday celebration during the summer tourism season.
