RAPID CITY, S.D. — City administrative offices and several municipal services will adjust operations next week in observance of Juneteenth Freedom Day on Friday, June 19.

According to the City of Rapid City, administrative offices will be closed for the federal holiday. The Rapid City Landfill also will be closed, and changes are planned for residential trash collection schedules.

City officials said Monday trash routes will operate as normal, while Tuesday through Friday collections will be picked up one day earlier than their usual schedule. Residents are encouraged to leave containers out until they are collected. Recycling services for residents on the bi-weekly schedule will continue as planned, although Monday, Wednesday and Friday recycling routes will also be serviced one day earlier during the holiday week.

Public transportation services will not operate on the holiday. Rapid Transit Services, including RapidRide and Dial-A-Ride, will be closed Friday, June 19. The Rapid City Public Library will also be closed.

Administrative offices at The Monument will be closed, although the facility will remain open for scheduled events. Administrative offices at the Rapid City Regional Airport, as well as the Rapid City Police and Fire departments, will be closed, but airport operations and emergency services will continue on normal schedules.

Several recreational facilities will remain open during the holiday. The Roosevelt Swim Center will operate regular hours from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with open swim available from 3:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. The facility’s 50-meter outdoor pool will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Outdoor pools at Horace Mann, Parkview and Jimmy Hilton at Sioux Park will be open from noon to 6 p.m.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks June 19, 1865, when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and months after the Civil War had ended.
