RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police Department officers joined law enforcement agencies from across South Dakota on the afternoon of May 13, 2026, to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, escorting the ceremonial flame through the streets of Rapid City in support of Special Olympics South Dakota athletes.

Officers hit the pavement alongside colleagues from other public safety agencies statewide, carrying the torch through Rapid City as part of a tradition that celebrates inclusion, courage and the competitive spirit of Special Olympics competitors.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of the largest public awareness and fundraising vehicles for Special Olympics movements worldwide, bringing together officers and athletes in communities across the country each year.

“This run is more than just miles – it’s about championing inclusion, courage, and the competitive spirit that defines these athletes,” the Rapid City Police Department said in a statement.

Special Olympics South Dakota provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the state. Athletes from across South Dakota are set to compete this year following the Rapid City torch run.

The Rapid City Police Department said the determination shown by Special Olympics athletes inspires its officers in their daily service to the Rapid City community
