RAPID CITY, S.D. – Crews from the Rapid City Streets Department are keeping busy this month, working to sweep every street in the city while also chasing a goal of filling 3,000 potholes before the end of May.

The city’s street sweeper crews are approaching the midway point of Sweeps Month, working to broom and collect debris from every street in the community during May.

Meanwhile, pothole patching crews are already making a strong push toward that 3,000-pothole goal. Street Superintendent Jesse Rieb said crews filled 862 potholes in just the first week of the month, using nearly 24 tons of material.

“The plan is to hit 3,000 potholes just in the month of May, which we are on track to do,” Rieb said. “The winter took its toll on city streets and crews are taking a lot of pride in working hard to fill as many as they can this month.”

City crews fill roughly 4,000 potholes each year, with the bulk of that work completed in warmer months once the asphalt plant opens for the season.

The efforts come during National Public Works Week, May 17-23, which is shining a spotlight on the work of Rapid City public works employees across the region.

Rieb encourages Rapid City residents to call the city’s pothole hotline at 605-394-4152 to report problem areas, advising callers to provide as specific a location as possible for quicker service. Residents can also use the “Report A Problem” feature on the city’s website at https://bit.ly/RapidCityLightsAndPotholes to flag potholes, non-working street or traffic lights, signals, and traffic signs.
