RAPID CITY, S.D. – An 18-year-old Rapid City woman faces multiple charges following a high-speed pursuit that endangered children at a local playground on Wednesday evening.

Jessina Lefthandbull was arrested and booked into the Pennington County Jail after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle and hiding inside a nearby apartment.

According to authorities, the incident began around 6:55 p.m. when Rapid City police officers spotted a pickup truck known to be stolen in a parking lot in the 1300 block of Atlas Street. When officers attempted to make contact with the female driver, they witnessed her toss an item out of the vehicle’s window.

The driver then put the truck in gear and sped through the parking lot at a high rate of speed before driving off-road. Police later located the abandoned truck behind an apartment building, where it had crashed into a guard rail.

Witnesses at the scene informed police that the driver had fled into a nearby apartment building. Officers made contact with the occupants of the apartment and located Lefthandbull inside.

Multiple witnesses also approached officers to report that the stolen truck had sped past a nearby playground where children were present during the pursuit.

A subsequent search of the bag thrown from the window revealed methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Lefthandbull was taken into custody on charges of second-degree eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a valid license, and littering. She was also detained on a Department of Corrections warrant, a parole hold, and two additional outstanding warrants.
