RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City woman was arrested Friday morning after allegedly stealing a Rapid City Fire Department Mobile Medic SUV from an active call and leading officers on a multi-agency pursuit.
At around 10 a.m. on Sept. 25, officers were dispatched to an apartment at 235 Curtis Street for a report of an assault. On arrival, police made contact with several individuals in an apartment, and a Rapid City Fire Department Mobile Medic Unit was dispatched to evaluate an injured party.
While RCFD crews were treating the injured party, a female subject, identified as 26-year-old Mahpiya Red Feather of Rapid City, entered the driver’s seat of the Mobile Medic SUV. Red Feather placed the vehicle into gear and drove off.
Police on scene quickly caught up to the vehicle, pursuing it after it turned eastbound on Interstate 90. The SUV exited the interstate at Exit 63 and continued eastbound along Highway 14/16.
Spike strips were successfully deployed by a Pennington County Sheriff’s Office deputy prior to the vehicle coming to a stop in the area of South C Avenue and W. Elm Street in New Underwood, where Red Feather was detained.
Law enforcement determined Red Feather is on parole. She was placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Eluding, Grand Theft, and a Parole Hold, with additional charges likely pending as the investigation into the incident continues.
The Rapid City Police Department extended its “appreciation to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol for their assistance in the pursuit.”
