RAPID CITY, S.D. – Reports of gunshots in multiple Rapid City neighborhoods Wednesday evening were likely caused by a backfiring vehicle rather than actual gunfire, according to the Rapid City Police Department.
Officers responded around 9:40 p.m. after receiving a report of gunfire heard in the area of Skyline Drive. Several minutes later, police received a second report of gunshots heard in the area of Sioux Park.
Police checked both Rapid City locations and found no spent casings, property damage, or other physical evidence of gunfire.
Witnesses contacted during the investigation reported seeing a pickup truck in the area of West Main Street that was backfiring, which “could’ve been mistaken for gunshots,” according to police.
Anyone with information relevant to the investigation into the reported gunshots is asked to contact police at 605-394-4131.
