Rodney Lee Putnam, born March 8, 1956, in Webster, Day County, South Dakota, was the son of Robert Putnam and Mary Jane Putnam (Lang).
He spent much of his early life in South Dakota and graduated from Bristol High School in 1974.
He went on to attend South Dakota State University, where he studied Journalism, and later the University of South Dakota–Springfield, where he earned his certificate as an HVAC technician. Rodney was a skilled tradesman and business owner who took pride in his work. In 1994, he established Accent Air & Mechanical and worked as an HVAC specialist throughout Billings, Montana. His career was rooted in hands-on technical work and self-employment. He retired in 2014 and moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he enjoyed spending his time fishing and hunting. Rod moved back to South Dakota in 2019. In retirement, Rodney returned to ranch life, living on the Norman ranch where he found purpose in the daily rhythm of the land. He enjoyed helping feed the cattle and taking part in the work that kept the ranch running. The quiet routine and time spent outdoors suited him well, and he took pride in contributing in a hands-on way, reflecting the steady work ethic that defined much of his life. Fishing was a longtime passion for Rodney and an important part of his life. Beginning in the early 2000s, he competed in semi-professional fishing, a pursuit he remained dedicated to for many years. He often invited his daughter, Aubrey, to join him as his fishing partner in tournaments, hoping to share that passion with her. Time spent on the water brought him both challenge and enjoyment, and he was known for his knowledge, patience, and skill. His accomplishments in the sport earned him multiple awards and recognition.
Rodney is survived by his daughter, Aubrey Putnam and her husband, Jeff; his brothers, Randy and Tim Putnam; and other siblings.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Putnam, and his mother, Mary Jane Putnam (Lang).
Upon his request cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
