Rapid City, SD – After serving as the Mayor of Rapid City since 2023 and serving on the City Council before, Mayor Salumn will not seek another term.

A letter to Rapid City from Mayor Jason Salumn:

Friends and neighbors,

I want to share a personal decision with you, one that was not made lightly, but with clear eyes and deep gratitude. I will not seek another term as mayor in 2027. When this term ends, I will have served Rapid City for ten years: six on the City Council and four as your mayor. Serving Rapid City has been one of the great honors of my life.

I know this may surprise some of you. When asked, I said I was leaning toward running again, but that I needed time to work through the decision. Over the past several months, I took that time. I prayed. I talked with the people closest to me. This is not a decision you make on your best day or your worst day. I gave it room to breathe, and over the summer it became clear the time is right. A decade in local office feels complete, and I have peace about the decision.

The best thing I can leave the city with is momentum. Rapid City is in a strong position. We secured funding and partnerships for the sports complex. Public safety has been strengthened with new facilities and more personnel. The airport is expanding. Businesses are building and growing. We have new and improved parks. We have made a historic investment in our streets. None of this happens by accident. Public service is a team sport. I am proud of the progress we have made together, and I am committed to protecting that momentum through the rest of this term.

My hope for Rapid City is that it is a place where kids thrive and families flourish. If we take care of the next generation, we take care of almost everything else that matters.

In the end, I am a citizen who wanted to serve my community. That is what led me to the mayor’s office. This office never belonged to me. It belongs to you. I have only been a steward of it, and I have worked hard to leave it better than I found it. I am announcing this now so other citizens have time to consider whether they should take their turn.

In the meantime, my desire to serve remains unchanged. I will bring my best and finish strong.

Thank you to my wife, our kids, our family, and our friends. Thank you to our entire city team, to those who keep us safe, and to all the leaders and partners I have had the pleasure to serve with. And I am thankful for all of you who have supported me and placed your trust in me.

God is so good. May He bless Rapid City, and may He bless each and every one of you.
