SUMMERSET, S.D. – Several businesses located in a building at 8014 Stagestop Road were damaged when a fire broke out Wednesday afternoon.

Summerset and Piedmont Fire were among those who responded to the blaze at the Stagestop Plaza, where a casino, insurance agency, daycare and coffee shop are all located.

First arriving units found fire burning in the enclosed canopy of the single-story commercial structure. With the size of the building and the current heat of reaching 100 degrees, a second alarm was requested early in the incident for manpower. The fire was confined to the original structure and there was fire extension into attic space of a few of the office spaces.

With great mutual aid support, fire officials say they were able to keep the building salvageable for the businesses to save property items within. However, the building is currently unoccupiable for the residing businesses due to the fire damage and firefighting operations.

All occupants within the building during the incident, including children at the daycare, safely exited and no civilian injuries were reported. Two firefighters were treated and released on site for heat related injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the South Dakota State Fire Marshall’s Office.
