The South Dakota Air National Guard took part in one of the country’s biggest motorsports traditions Sunday during the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
Pilots from the 175th Fighter Squadron flew F-16 fighter jets over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as part of the pre-race ceremonies for the nationally televised event. The squadron represented the South Dakota Air National Guard during the flyover above the historic speedway.
The Indianapolis 500, often referred to as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” drew hundreds of thousands of fans to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for race day.
Ahead of the event, the South Dakota Air National Guard announced the return of the 175th Fighter Squadron to the speedway, saying its pilots would perform the flyover while representing South Dakota on a national stage.
The appearance continued a longstanding military tradition at the Indianapolis 500, where military branches from across the country participate in pre-race ceremonies honoring service members and veterans. The flyover is considered one of the signature moments before the green flag drops on race day.
