RAPID CITY, S.D. — In just a few short years, StereoTrip has gone from a newly formed group of seasoned Black Hills musicians to one of the most talked-about bands in the region.
Now, the fan-favorite cover band is preparing to take the stage at Summer Nights in downtown Rapid City on June 25, bringing their high-energy show and crowd-pleasing setlist to one of the Black Hills’ most beloved community events.
While StereoTrip may seem like an overnight success, the band’s roots run deep throughout the local music scene.
“Most of us have been Black Hills musicians in many projects through several decades,” the band said. “We fell into each other’s spheres a few years ago, and StereoTrip was created as the culmination of timing, experience, and our desire to embrace the music that we feel most audiences want to hear.”
That shared experience and passion for performing have helped create something special.
The members of StereoTrip come from different musical backgrounds, careers, and life experiences, but they credit their chemistry to a mutual respect for one another and a genuine appreciation for the audience that continues to support them.
“We all felt like we were going to be part of something special,” the band said. “We embrace our multifaceted dynamics as an asset and try to build on what would pull many groups apart.”
The result is a band that has quickly earned a reputation as one of the premier live acts in the Black Hills.
A big part of that success comes from the way StereoTrip approaches its setlists.
Rather than focusing on a single genre or era, the band works to create a musical experience that appeals to multiple generations.
“It really comes down to recognizability and energy and making sure there’s something for everyone in the crowd,” the band said.
From classic rock favorites and country hits to 1990s and 2000s anthems and current pop songs, StereoTrip carefully selects music that keeps audiences engaged from the first song to the last.
“It’s important to us that no part of the crowd feels left out and that everyone feels included in the show,” the band said.
That philosophy makes Summer Nights a perfect fit.
After taking a year off in 2025, Summer Nights returned to downtown Rapid City this summer, bringing live music, food, families, tourists and local businesses back to the heart of the city.
“We were so excited that Summer Nights was returning to downtown Rapid City,” the band said. “More than a music event, it is a community event. It is a wonderful way for a city to feel like neighbors getting together for a fun evening.”
The band believes Summer Nights plays a vital role in showcasing local talent while strengthening the connection between residents, visitors and the downtown community.
“Young musicians have great exposure to dreams and possibilities,” the band said. “Tourists get to be a part of the downtown energy each week and mingle with the people that make the Black Hills great.”
For StereoTrip, performing in front of thousands of people filling the streets of downtown Rapid City is about more than simply playing music.
The band sees Summer Nights as a celebration of the region’s vibrant arts and entertainment culture.
“The Black Hills has a beautiful culture of musicians, dancers and music fans,” the band said. “Summer Nights shines a spotlight on what is happening downtown and in other local venues.”
As Rapid City continues to grow, events like Summer Nights help maintain the sense of community that makes the Black Hills unique.
“We think it’s an amazing way for a downtown to stay relevant and not get lost as a population grows,” the band said.
Despite the band’s rapid rise in popularity, StereoTrip remains focused on one thing above all else: the audience.
“If folks are going to take the time in their busy lives and with all of the options they have in the Black Hills for a night out, we want them to enjoy the music and how we perform it,” the band said.
That mindset has helped build a loyal following and continues to drive the band’s success.
For those who have never experienced a StereoTrip show, the band promises a night packed with familiar favorites, energy and nostalgia.
“We are a tribute band for as many great songs as we can cram into our time with our audience,” the band said. “We want our audience to feel what it’s like to hear as many of their favorite songs that they grew up with on their stereos and take a trip through decades of good music.”
Perhaps what has surprised the band most is seeing how music continues to bring people together across generations.
“We are finding that multiple generations love a lot of the same music, and it’s so much fun to bring people together,” the band said.
StereoTrip will perform at Summer Nights in downtown Rapid City on Thursday, June 25. The free community concert begins at 6 p.m. and offers music fans from across Rapid City and the Black Hills a chance to experience one of the region’s fastest-growing bands while celebrating the return of one of the community’s favorite summer traditions.
And if StereoTrip has its way, the conversation about the band is only just beginning.
“There are so many great bands in this area,” the band said. “We’re just happy to be named among them.”
