Steven Albert Wurnig was born on March 2, 1950, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Henrietta (Hall) and Albert Wurnig. He grew up on the family ranch southeast of Newell, alongside his sister, Karen, and brothers, Frank and Jim. He graduated from Newell High School and went on to earn a business degree from Northern State College in Aberdeen.

Over the course of his life, Steve lived in South Dakota, North Dakota, California, Arizona, and Colorado. He worked in a variety of business and service roles, including equipment leasing and merchant services, and remained entrepreneurial throughout his life. He was active in his church communities and loved Jesus with his whole heart.

Steve enjoyed cooking and took particular pride in preparing special meals for holidays and family gatherings. He worked hard in every role he had and often went the extra mile, literally, to pick up a coworker for work or give the job site extra sweeping or dusting.

Steve married Lauralee Holsing in 1976, and together they had three children: Jill Marie (Wurnig) Oulman, Joel David Wurnig, and Jeremy (Jerry) Steven Wurnig. He is survived by his children and by his grandchildren: Ella, David, and Emerson Oulman; Natalie Hanna Wurnig; and Samantha, Elsie, and Harriet Wurnig.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Karen.

A memorial service will be held in Rapid City, South Dakota, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday September 26, 2026 at Minerva’s. His remains will be laid to rest with his parents at Hope Cemetery in Newell, South Dakota at 11:00 a.m.
