RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Stevens scored a pair of first-half goals and held off a late surge to secure a 2-1 victory over rival Rapid City Central at Sioux Park on Tuesday night, sealed by a crucial diving save in the final minutes.
Miles Wright provided all the offense for Stevens, netting both goals off assists from teammate Gavin Callahan. Callahan repeatedly delivered passes past the Cobblers defensive line, allowing Wright to dribble in on goal and finish past Central goalkeeper Marcus Callahan.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 8-3 on the season and extended their winning streak to six matches.
The victory came with a much tougher challenge than the teams’ first meeting on Sept. 10, which Stevens won 8-1. Central kept the match competitive throughout the second half and mounted a late comeback attempt.
The Cobblers cut the deficit in the 73rd minute when Chase Kepler converted a penalty kick. Central nearly equalizer four minutes later when Noah Lipp sent a long-range shot toward the top of the net in the 77th minute, but Raiders goalkeeper Creed Tennyson made an outstretched, swatted save to preserve the lead.
Marcus Callahan finished the night with seven saves for Central.
