RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City police patrol turned into a felony arrest late May 15 after officers stopped a pickup truck whose occupants had allegedly become confrontational with a resident in the 3500 block of Black Fox Drive.
At around 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area following a report of a suspicious incident. The reporting party told police they were outside their residence when an unknown pickup truck pulled up and an occupant asked them for a cigarette and invited them into the vehicle. When the resident refused, the occupants became confrontational before driving away.
Officers located the truck a short time later and conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, police detained the occupants and identified one of them as Diego Perez, 20, of Box Elder. Officers discovered several open alcohol containers inside the vehicle, along with a loaded revolver that was later determined to have been stolen during a vehicle burglary in August 2025.
Perez was found to be on parole and, according to police, had been released from prison earlier that same day.
Perez was arrested on charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Receiving Stolen Property, and Open Container in a Motor Vehicle. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail and booked at 12:15am with grand theft(firearm), possession of drug paraphernalia,
