STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Council approved Resolution 2026-36 Monday night, adoption of the city’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Safety Action Plan.
The city partnered with J.E.O. Consulting Group to develop the plan, which provides the city a comprehensive, data-driven roadmap for improving transportation safety throughout Sturgis.
Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush explains the action being taken by the council in approving the resolution.
While there is no immediate construction or capital expenditure associated with adoption of the plan, future implementation of individual projects or strategies identified in the plan may have fiscal impacts.
Bush says those projects will be evaluated individually and brought forward through the appropriate budgeting, capital improvement, grant application, procurement and city council approval processes.
Adoption of the plan may also improve the city’s ability to compete for future transportation safety grants and other outside funding opportunities.
The council Monday night also approved Resolution 2026-32, which offers a small parcel of formerly un-platted city-owned property near the Exit 32 recycling center to a lessee for a possible future wireless communication facility site.
Approval of the option and lease means the council is willing to make this city property available for potential use. Public Works Director Rick Bush says approval would not authorize construction of a tower or approve any future wireless facility permit. If the lessee elects to proceed, they would still need to apply for and obtain any required city approvals through the city’s normal public hearing, ordinance, zoning, building and permitting processes.
