STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Council Monday night passed a resolution that renames the Sturgis Downhill Bike Park in honor of the late former mayor Kevin Forrester.
Forrester was a strong advocate for the development of the City’s downhill mountain biking facilities located on the hillside overlooking Fort Meade.
Through his leadership, advocacy, and hands-on involvement, the initial trail within the park was designed and constructed, laying the foundation for what has become a growing mountain biking destination.
The park currently consists of multiple trails and is expected to continue expanding in the future.
Ward 4 councilman Jim Thompson shared his thoughts ahead of the vote on naming the track after Forrester.
In the end, Thompson agreed with the resolution that will formally rename the park to the Kevin Forrester Downhill Bike Park.
Council members say it honors the memory and legacy of the former mayor, by recognizing his significant role in the creation and development of the facility.
Forrester passed away in April.
