STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council held heavy discussion Tuesday night over their revised residential camping ordinance.

The ordinance is being updated following complaints that were received last year.

Sturgis Mayor Kevin Forrester says as camping activity haas grown and evolved over the years, especially during the annual motorcycle rally, the city is working to determine the best way to regulate it.

He says the proposed ordinance would introduce a clearer, two-track approach.

Private, non-public camping at residential properties will have limits on the number of camping units, campers and days per year.

Meanwhile, paid, or advertised camping would be allowed at owner-occupied homes if the number of campers or camping units does not exceed the basic limits set in the ordinance. Otherwise, the property owner would need to obtain a simple permit from the city. The proposed ordinance sets the limit in both versions at 2 units or 10 campers up to 10 days.

Sturgis City Administrator Aaron Jordan says the city will take into account comments and suggestions received Tuesday night and the council will take another look at the proposal at a later meeting.
