STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Police Department and Meade County Sheriff’s Office have released their first report for the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater reports 8 D.U.I. arrests on the first day along with 6 felony drug arrests. Both of those numbers are right in line with last year.
The annual problem of parking, remains a problem – with 17 illegal parking citations issued on the first day.
Sturgis Police also responded to 2 assaults, one injury accident, two non-injury accidents and had 4 underage consumption of alcohol citations.
In all, there were 19 people booked into the Meade County Jail, eight above last year on the first day.
Meanwhile, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office reported the following for their initial rally report:
Calls for Service: 147 (193)
Traffic Stops: 57 (57)
DUI Arrests: 5 (7)
Drug Arrests: 2 (3)
Simple Assaults: 0 (0)
Injury Crashes: 2 (1)
Non-Injury Crashes: 0 (0)
MEADE COUNTY JAIL
Total Booked into the Meade County Jail: 25 (33)
Current Jail Population: 41
(Numbers in parantheses represent same time period last year.)
Meade County Sheriff Pat West says “a quick reminder about the jail numbers: Anyone arrested by any law enforcement agency in Meade County is generally processed through the Meade County Jail.
That means those 25 bookings may include people arrested by the Sturgis Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Summerset Police Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, or another agency operating in the county.
The booking number represents the number of people processed during this 24-hour period — not necessarily the number of people arrested by the Sheriff’s Office.”
