SUMMERSET, S.D. – The city of Summerset if considering a regulation banning mining operations in and near city limits.
The reaction follows those of Piedmont, where a proposed limestone mine has drawn heavy opposition from landowners.
Summerset’s rule would rely on a section within the city’s zoning code that allows the commission to set general regulations that apply to every zoning district within the city.
It would add mining operations as an activity prohibited citywide.
First reading of the ordinance is expected to take place at the March 19th meeting.
