RAPID CITY, S.D. – A local community tradition reached a major milestone on Thursday as golfers hit the greens to support vulnerable children and families throughout the region.

The 13th Annual Kieffer Sanitation Trash Can Open took place June 11 at The Golf Club at Red Rock in Rapid City. A total of 144 golfers participated, forming 36 teams to tee off in support of Children’s Home Society, or CHS.

This year’s tournament raised more than $50,000 specifically designated for the new CHS Rapid City Campus. The funds will expand access to critical services for children and families across the Black Hills area, reinforcing a mission dedicated to the prevention, treatment and healing of trauma.

“Thanks to the generosity of Kieffer Sanitation and every golfer, sponsor and donor who participated in the Trash Can Open, we raised more than $50,000 for our new Rapid City Campus,” said Chief Philanthropy Officer Jon Mammenga. “This incredible support helps us continue providing services to children and families across the Black Hills. We are deeply grateful to Kieffer for hosting this tournament in our honor and for investing in our mission to prevent, treat and heal trauma.”

Over the past 12 years, the local golf tournament has grown into a significant regional event. With the conclusion of Thursday’s tournament, the event has raised more than $415,000 for CHS since its inception.

The tournament offered several unique visual elements for attendees and organizers, including golfer check-in, opening remarks, the coveted golden trophy, and an iconic dumpster that was turned into a barbecue grill.

CHS Director of Development Heather Hoeye noted the significant impact the annual tournament has on sustaining regional services and advancing the construction and capabilities of the new Rapid City Campus, which will provide a centralized hub for trauma care and family support services throughout the Black Hills community.
