Breakfast & Brunch | $$ | 7211 Black Hawk Road, Suite 2, Black Hawk

Settling In

Somebody had to invent brunch. I mean, it was right there. That somebody was a British writer named Guy Beringer, back in 1895. He figured Sunday breakfast came way too early for anybody who’d been out late on Saturday night. His fix was one late meal that rolled breakfast and lunch together. He called it brunch, and the name stuck.

It caught on over here by the 1930s. These days you can find brunch just about anywhere, any day of the week, and I’m all for it.

Brunchies sits at 7211 Black Hawk Road, and the menu runs breakfast and lunch side by side. The building has been a handful of different things over the years. It’s easy to find, right off the interstate and attached to a gas station. Inside, it feels like an old diner. A long counter runs along one side with no stools at it, and the room has that classic breakfast spot look.

The Little Stuff

Victoria and I came in at almost 9 on a Friday morning, and nearly every table was full. Right away, good sign.

Brunchies is known for cinnamon rolls as big as your face, and we came for exactly that. There weren’t any that day. Our server told us the owner was out of town and she’s the only one with the recipe.

That was disappointing, and it left me with a couple of questions. Could they bake a batch ahead of time and freeze some for days like this? Could somebody put up a quick social media post letting folks know the rolls are off for the week? We heard other tables asking about them, too. Maybe it’s all a brilliant ploy to get me back through the door. If so, it worked. I’ll be back for one.

I got a 24 ounce latte for five bucks. I like mine extra hot, and it came out that way without me asking. Five bucks for that much coffee gets my attention every time.

The Reason You’re There

Victoria and I split everything down the middle.

The Create an Omelet runs about 15 bucks and lets you pick up to five fillings. We went with tomato, onion, mushroom, cheddar and bacon. It’s a three egg omelet that looked even bigger on the plate. It had real cheddar, big chunks of bacon, and tomatoes and mushrooms that tasted fresh. Everything was cooked right.

Then there’s the pancake. One pancake is $2.75, and you could probably feed a family with it. It’s fluffy and dense at the same time. I can’t imagine eating two. If you order the stack, bring somebody to split it with.

The French toast was my favorite thing on the table. One slice is three bucks, and it was really well made. It came out to the table nice and warm, too. Victoria took it a step further. She grabbed a side of sausage gravy, a buck extra, and started dipping her French toast in it. That’s her thing. If you like sweet and savory together, give it a try.

What Sticks With You

Brunchies feels like a place built for the people who live around it. The portions are big and the prices are fair. Our whole meal, latte included, came to 31 bucks before the tip. For two people eating that well, I call that a deal. The room was also full of folks who looked like they’d been there before.

The roll situation is the one knock. When your signature item depends on one person, some days it won’t be there.

Victoria’s Taste

“With all of the breakfast options you can find in and around Rapid City, you should absolutely add this to your rotation.”

Final Bite

We left full and happy, with a 24 ounce latte in hand. I’ll call ahead next time. Then I’m ordering a roll the size of my face.

Taste the Room pays for every meal we review. We don’t accept comped food, and restaurants aren’t notified of our visit in advance. It’s how we keep our reviews honest and independent.
