South Dakota Reduces Deer Hunting Licenses Following Viral Disease Outbreak

The state of South Dakota is taking steps to limit deer hunting in areas affected by a viral disease to give deer populations a better chance to recover. Several licenses have been removed this year including mentored and youth deer licenses, unsold licenses, and some rules have been modified to increase deer numbers. Reports of deer deaths from epizootic hemorrhagic disease have spiked as hunters take to the fields in South Dakota where the disease primarily impacts white-tailed deer. The disease usually affects deer herds in late summer or early fall. Authorities found gasoline but no explosives in the suspects’ vehicles. Iran denies involvement, although it considers any base used to attack its territory a legitimate target.
