RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Police Department (RCPD) is highlighting a troubling trend after two separate incidents of firearm theft occurred in a single 24-hour window—both involving unlocked vehicles.

On the morning of May 22nd, a resident on North Spruce Street discovered their pickup had been entered overnight. Because the doors were left unlocked, the thief was able to walk away with a loaded handgun without having to break a single window.

History repeated itself the very next morning on Oak Avenue. A single owner reported that three of their vehicles had been burglarized overnight. Again, all three were left unlocked, and another loaded handgun was reported missing.

Both cases have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Division.

The Reality Check

These two cases bring the year-to-date total to 10 firearms stolen from vehicles in Rapid City. Police remind residents that a vehicle is not a gun safe. Responsible ownership means knowing exactly where your weapon is every second of the day.

How to Protect Property

Lock the Doors: Most vehicle burglaries are “crimes of opportunity” involving unlocked handles.

Remove Valuables: Never leave electronics, bags, or wallets in plain sight.

Secure Firearms: If you aren’t in the vehicle, your firearm shouldn’t be either. Bring it inside to a secure, locked safe. Don’t make it easy for criminals to arm themselves. Lock up and stay vigilant.
