Veronica Wonda Heimer, affectionately known as Vicky, entered the world on July 21, 1953, in Hettinger, North Dakota. She was a beloved daughter of Francis and Martha (Maychrzak) Heimer, who precede her in death, along with three infant siblings and her sister, Sandy May. Vicky peacefully departed this life on October 12, 2026, in the warm embrace of Sherry and Jim Brechtel, along with their son Luke.
Vicky’s journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and service. She graduated from Sturgis Brown High School and went on to serve in the United States Army for three years and six months. During her honorable service, she achieved the rank of SP 4 and was the proud recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, along with the Expert Qualification Badge on Rifle. Her service to her country was a testament to her courage and commitment.
Following her military service, Vicky continued to serve her community with a career at the VFW in Sturgis, South Dakota and at Fort Meade. Her colleagues and friends remember her as a diligent and caring individual who always had a warm smile and a kind word for everyone she met.
Vicky’s life was enriched by simple pleasures. She found joy in reading and movies, and she had a particular fondness for iced coffee, which she would happily sip on throughout the day. These small delights brought her peace and happiness, reflecting her appreciation for life’s everyday moments.
Vicky’s family, who will forever cherish her memory, includes her siblings: Guy Heimer, Lorraine Heimer, Paul Heimer, Joseph (Dee) Heimer, John (Nancy) Heimer, and Christine (Gary) Thole. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and a circle of loving friends who were touched by her kindness and generosity.
A service to honor Vicky’s life will be held on October 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Newell, South Dakota. Following the service, she will be laid to rest with full military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Sherry and Jim Brechtel for their unwavering love and support during Vicki’s final days. Their care and kindness brought comfort and peace to Vicky and her family.
