With Minnesota Vikings training camp approaching, the competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy remains the biggest storyline surrounding the team.Stitch and BJ discussed the quarterback battle, Minnesota’s improved roster and the team’s Super Bowl potential during the latest episode of “Vikings Water Cooler Talk,” brought to listeners by GameDay Men’s Health.

Although the hosts acknowledged there is little NFL news during the summer break, they said the quarterback situation in Minnesota continues to generate national attention. BJ said he is comfortable with Murray, McCarthy or veteran Carson Wentz leading the offense. He pointed to Minnesota winning nine games last season despite inconsistent quarterback play and believes the position has improved during the offseason.

“I think with our team defensively and offensively, we got better,” BJ said. “Our quarterback situation got better, whoever’s playing.”

Stitch continues to believe McCarthy is Minnesota’s long-term franchise quarterback. However, he said Murray’s presence should push the young quarterback and give the Vikings another capable option.

“If Kyler starts, J.J. will still get his opportunity,” Stitch said. “I still believe 100% that J.J. is the franchise quarterback in this scenario.”

The hosts also discussed Murray’s future beyond the upcoming season. A strong performance could make him one of the more valuable quarterbacks available in free agency, but it could also make it difficult for Minnesota to afford a new contract. They agreed that Murray would likely need to accept a team-friendly deal to remain with the Vikings long term, particularly with the franchise already committed financially to stars such as wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Minnesota’s rookies and young defensive players were another focus of the episode. Stitch and BJ said they are interested in seeing how quickly Caleb Banks can earn playing time in Brian Flores’ complex defensive system.

They also highlighted Dallas Turner, who is expected to take on a larger role following Jonathan Greenard’s departure. Turner showed progress last season and now has an opportunity to become a full-time starter. The hosts praised Minnesota’s decision to allow Turner time to develop instead of forcing him into the starting lineup immediately.

“They did well by him,” BJ said. “Take your time, understand the game, learn the system and become the best you can.”

Minnesota’s secondary remains one of the team’s biggest areas of concern, particularly when it comes to depth. However, the hosts expressed confidence in a cornerback group featuring Isaiah Rodgers, Byron Murphy Jr. and James Pierre. Questions also remain at safety, including the status of longtime Viking Harrison Smith. Josh Metellus provides an experienced option, but the hosts said Minnesota may need additional depth if Smith does not return.

The Vikings must also make a decision about the future of offensive tackle Brian O’Neill. Stitch said Minnesota should move quickly to secure an extension for the veteran and offensive line captain. Despite the remaining questions, both hosts believe the Vikings have built a roster capable of competing for an NFC championship.

Minnesota will again face a difficult path through the NFC North. Detroit has one of the league’s most explosive players in running back Jahmyr Gibbs, while Green Bay, Chicago and Minnesota each enter the season with postseason expectations. The hosts also identified Seattle, Philadelphia and San Francisco as potential NFC contenders. Still, BJ said the Vikings may be in their best position in years to make a deep playoff run.

“I don’t see a reason why we can’t be a Super Bowl-contending team,” BJ said. “I feel like we’re in the best situation we’ve been in in a long time.”

The episode also included discussion about players the hosts enjoy watching around the league. BJ selected Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield because of his aggressive playing style and personality, while Stitch chose Gibbs because of his speed and ability as both a runner and receiver.

Training camp will provide the first real answers about Minnesota’s quarterback competition, rookie class and defensive depth. Until then, the debate over Murray and McCarthy will continue to dominate the conversation surrounding the Vikings.
