RAPID CITY, SD — A Saturday-evening traffic stop became a Sunday-morning pursuit, ending in the arrest of one 23-year-old Michael Reyna of Box Elder.
Though a report provided by the RCPD does not specify the time of the initial pullover, police indicate that the first encounter with Reyna’s black Dodge pickup truck occurred in the evening, as police on regular patrols observed Reyna headed the wrong way down St. Joseph Street.
Police at the time confirmed that Reyna was sober at the time, and as a result no charges were pursued at the time – however the same couldn’t be said about their second encounter with Reyna.
Around 2:00 AM the same incident seems to have occurred, with Reyna once again heading the wrong way down St. Joseph St. while observed by police, before quickly turning around to head in the correct direction, seemingly realizing his mistake. Police signaled for Reyna to stop, however when he did not, they initiated a pursuit of the vehicle. “At one point during the pursuit, the vehicle turned to head north on West Boulevard,” said Brendyn Medina of the RCPD, “During the turn, it struck the center median, sustaining significant damage”.
The pursuit eventually lead to north I-190 before police were able to initiate a stop of the vehicle, where police noted “the smell of an alcoholic beverage” on him, and initiated a DUI test. This test, according to police, showed that Reyna was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. He was subsequently arrested on charges of DUI, Second Degree Eluding, Leaving the Scene of a Crash, and Wrong Way Driving.
