With training camp less than a month away, the hosts of Vikings Water Cooler Talk with Stitch and BJ say the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition remains the biggest storyline heading into the 2026 NFL season.
During the latest episode, presented by GameDay Men’s Health of Rapid City, BJ and co-host Stitch recapped the conclusion of minicamp, discussed offseason grades from national analysts and shared their expectations for a team they believe could exceed expectations despite lingering questions at quarterback.
The hosts noted reports from minicamp indicating veteran Kyler Murray struggled during one practice while J.J. McCarthy reportedly threw multiple touchdown passes without an interception. While acknowledging practice statistics should be viewed cautiously, they said the performances added another layer to an ongoing competition that is expected to continue into training camp.
Jones argued that Murray is still learning Minnesota’s offense and that offseason practices are designed for quarterbacks to test their limits rather than avoid mistakes.
“That’s the time to take your lumps,” Jones said, adding that Murray’s willingness to challenge the defense could ultimately benefit him later in the preseason.
The hosts also reacted to ESPN’s offseason report card, which gave Minnesota a B-minus grade. While they agreed the evaluation was reasonable, both expressed confidence that the Vikings’ draft class and roster changes could ultimately outperform expectations.
They pointed to the development of linebacker Dallas Turner, the addition of wide receiver Jauan Jennings and the hiring of new general manager Nolan Teasley as moves that could pay dividends during the season. Jones also praised head coach Kevin O’Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores, calling Minnesota one of the league’s best-coached teams.
The conversation turned to a national report suggesting Minnesota should add another veteran edge rusher before training camp. The hosts said signing a player such as Haason Reddick could provide valuable depth behind the team’s current pass rushers, though they also noted the secondary may still benefit from another veteran addition.
One of the biggest debates centered on McCarthy’s long-term future.
Despite a rookie campaign that featured inconsistent play, Stitch said he remains convinced the former first-round pick will eventually become Minnesota’s franchise quarterback.
“If J.J. gets his opportunity, I don’t think he’ll ever look back,” Stitch said, pointing to McCarthy’s competitiveness, leadership and history of winning.
The hosts acknowledged that Murray could perform well enough to complicate the team’s future plans, but they also discussed the possibility that injuries or inconsistent play could open the door for McCarthy during the season. Veteran Carson Wentz was also mentioned as an experienced backup capable of stepping in if needed.
While opinions remain divided nationally over who should start, both hosts emphasized they believe Minnesota’s overall roster is strong enough to compete regardless of who wins the job.
They highlighted the team’s disciplined coaching, low penalty totals and balanced roster as reasons for optimism entering the season.
With July beginning and training camp approaching, Stitch and BJ said they expect more roster news in the coming weeks and look forward to seeing how the quarterback competition unfolds once full-contact practices begin.
The episode concluded with the hosts wishing listeners a happy Fourth of July, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and encouraging Vikings fans to stay tuned as the countdown to football season continues.
